The Goldengrove - JD Wetherspoon

Cocktail Bar | London | England | United Kingdom

Pub with cocktails and food

"The Goldengrove - JD Wetherspoon" is a well-known cocktail bar and also a pub of the famous British Wetherspoon chain, located in the Stratford area of London, England. As is typical for Wetherspoon pubs, this establishment combines a casual atmosphere with a wide selection of drinks and food at affordable prices. The name "Goldengrove" is a tribute to the poem "Spring and Fall" by the Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, who was born in Stratford. This literary connection gives the pub a certain cultural depth that distinguishes it from other establishments in the chain.

The interior of "Goldengrove" reflects the classic Wetherspoon style: functional, spacious, and without unnecessary frills. There is a central bar area surrounded by generous seating, including simple tables and chairs as well as some cushioned seating areas. Particularly noteworthy is the newly expanded beer garden, which is especially popular on warm days. This outdoor area offers a welcome change from the often dark and somewhat gloomy interior décor, which some visitors occasionally describe as uninviting. Nevertheless, cleanliness and friendly service are often positively highlighted.

The drink selection is diverse and includes a range of real ales, craft beers, and freshly ground Lavazza coffee. Although the cocktail bar itself does not offer elaborate signature creations like those found in specialized bars, the available cocktails are solid and attractively priced—a hallmark of the chain. Especially popular are the offers where drinks are included in the meal price, making "Goldengrove" a budget-friendly option. The menu features classic British pub dishes, including fish and chips, bangers and mash, and burgers, complemented by options like chicken wings or vegan alternatives. According to visitors, the quality of the food varies: while some praise its freshness and taste, others occasionally complain about cold or overcooked dishes as well as long wait times.

Family-friendly pub in London

"Goldengrove" attracts a mixed crowd—from locals to families and visitors exploring nearby attractions like the Westfield shopping center or the Olympic Park. It can get particularly lively on match days for West Ham United. The bar emphasizes a family-friendly atmosphere, supported by the relaxed ambiance and affordable prices. Additionally, modern technology is integrated, such as the ability to order from the table via an app, which speeds up service, even though it doesn’t always work smoothly.

Lively pub atmosphere, attentive service, beer incredibly cheap, but food cold in parts - needed longer in the microwave.

It's Witherspoon's in Stratford. Not great, not terrible. The staff are nice and some are really trying more than they should. Beers are cheap and that's probably the only redeeming feature of the place.

Staff not friendly. Ordered breakfast. 15 minutes later friends arrived and ordered theirs. Theirs arrived, asked the waitress why theirs had come out first, replied with a grunt 'thats the kitchen'. Had to ask for cups for our drinks. No teabags at station. Food only warm. Not a good experience.

Limited indoor seating, no steak knives, 1st choice meal not available for for one but not the other of our party. Lacked service finesse.

Staff were friendly. Food was awful, cold breakfast and bacon was anemic looking. Tea section had no milk and lacking teabags. A day later sickness all day!
